Why You Need It To Stay Ahead

SEO has always been an ever-changing world. Today, the new(ish) player is AI. Tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Claude, and Perplexity, are changing almost daily how people seek help online. It’s no longer good enough to rank on traditional search engine rankings anymore; now, you need to be found in AI as well.

Welcome to the era of Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)—the latest game-changing opportunity to secure new clients and increase revenue.

What is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing digital content to ensure it’s used in AI-generated responses provided by tools like ChatGPT, Google Gemini, and others. Unlike traditional SEO, which focuses on ranking content in search engine results pages (SERPs), GEO aims to position your brand within the content and answers that generative AI provides to users.

How does it work?

GEO involves strategies such as:

  • Crafting content structured for generative engines – writing with the engine in mind from the start
  • Maximizing content for featured snippets and zero-click results (super top of the search results)
  • Improving the structured data on your website so your site can pull more easily into AI engines
  • Mastering the content funnel for your specific brand/area of expertise
  • Developing consistency across all marketing channels (search, social, PR, branding)

GEO is not a replacement for SEO but an evolution of it, recognizing that a growing number of consumers are turning to AI engines instead of (or alongside) traditional search engines.

If you have worked on SEO in the past, GEO is an extension of that work. It should not require “starting from scratch” if your SEO was done well in the past. That said, continuing to do SEO without adapting will be very difficult in the future.

According to OpenAI, there are 300 million weekly active ChatGPT users as of December 2024. That is a LOT of people using Chat as a means for finding what they are looking for.

Why GEO Matters in 2025

The rise of AI in search engines signals a seismic shift in how businesses connect with their audiences. GEO is critical for staying competitive in this evolving landscape.

1. AI-Driven Search Has Become a Part of Daily Search Behavior

AI chats, summaries, and generated overviews are becoming routine features on platforms like Google and Bing. Now that AI search includes brand mentions and recommendations, missing out on these mentions could mean becoming invisible to your target audience.

Not to mention, the traffic loss. According to the Wall Street Journal, AI-generated searches may result in a 20-40% reduction in organic traffic for businesses that rely solely on traditional SEO. Those who integrate GEO into their strategies now will have a clear advantage.

2. Consumer Behavior is Changing

Modern users want instant, concise answers. Instead of sifting through multiple links and pages on Google, AI results are fast, damn-near instant and keep the creative process flowing vs getting users stuck in thought. This new taste of getting “real” answers faster than ever before fuels the need for making sure your content is part of those AI-generated answers.

The other variable to pay attention to is this. According to Search Engine Land, Google’s market share in Q4 of 2024 dropped below 90% for the first time since 2015. Lots of factors have impacted this and at this time, the drop is not being purely attributed to AI tools, but the cooling of the consumer love affair with Google is evident in their behavior. As marketers, we must pay attention to this.

3. SEO Itself Is No Longer Enough

Traditional SEO strategies are not enough to get your content to surface highly in AI tools. Without GEO strategies, your content risks being overlooked by AI models that prioritize highly structured, AI-friendly content. Keywords remain critical so you can validate your assumptions about how the world looks for your offerings, but that alone isn’t enough. You need both SEO and GEO strategies if you want to survive.

How GEO Differs from SEO

Although GEO shares similarities with SEO, such as improving content quality and keyword optimization, their goals and methods diverge significantly.

SEOGEO
Focuses on boosting rankings in search engine results pages (SERPs).Optimizes content to appear in AI-generated responses on platforms like ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude and more.
Relies on backlinks, meta tags, and search algorithms for visibility.Leverages structured data and AI algorithms to improve how your content is discovered in  AI tools.
Targets keywords and user intent for ranking within web searches.Uses AI-friendly phrasing (AKA conversational language) to ensure content is prioritized by generative engines.

GEO isn’t here to replace SEO; instead, it builds upon the core SEO foundational principles to meet the needs of someone searching in a tool like ChatGPT.

What We’re Seeing With Clients:

#1 Strong SEO-optimized websites are continuing to perform – the basics of SEO have not changed. Good page structure, well-optimized content, and a clear understanding of user intent are more important than ever. Websites without these three factors are falling in search results faster than their competitors.

#2 Traffic numbers have to be measured differently to get the full impact of GEO and AI impact– finding the source of traffic in Google Analytics is more complicated than before. Most AI traffic at the time of writing is being measured as “direct traffic,” there isn’t a variable for AI referrals. To see what content you are showing across the various AI tools, you need to look at new sources.

I lean heavily into the idea that the demand for transparency around the impact AI tools are having on referral sources will increase the pressure on Google to report this information. But, as of today, you need to think outside the box to determine where your AI traffic is coming from.

#3 Longer “how to” content is not performing as well in AI engines– ChatGPT is a thinking partner for its users. One natural question leads to another in rapid succession and reduces the need to search endlessly on Google for answers. If you think like your clients versus always trying to sell or educate your clients on everything, you will win for GEO.

#4 Shorter “to the point” content IS performing better in AI engines– think about what you want when you look for answers. If someone asks “how long can a glass of milk stay on the counter before it spoils” you don’t want to have to read about the history of milk, why milk goes bad and how to prevent it from spoiling before getting your answer. Get to the point faster and you will rank better for GEO results.

#5 NEVER forget your audience. User intent (AKA what someone wants from their search) is the critical variable. Shorter sentences, getting to the point faster and using structures like heading tags, internal links, and data to back up your opinions is what matters. Winning trust from your readers is how you move people through their buyer’s journey. Without it, they just go to the next result as they look for what they really want.

Generative Engine Optimization is here to stay. It’s the next generation of “future proofing” your business and gives prospective buyers what they want quickly and efficiently. Learning how to integrate GEO strategic thinking into your content model is critical in 2025 because everyone will be clamoring to get to the top of AI results.

GEO is the pathway to achieving that for your business.
