For this post, I want to talk with you like a friend. And as my friend, here’s the truth: SEO guarantees are a red flag simply because no one can guarantee what Google is going to do.

No one can guarantee what AI is going to do either.

So when an SEO company tells you they can guarantee first-page placement, your next question should be very simple: Can you show me how you’ve done that before, and can you explain exactly how you’re going to do it for me?

Because there is a big difference between helping a website grow through strong SEO practices and finding a shortcut that may disappear the minute Google updates their rules or changes a procedure.

No One Controls Google

Google decides which websites appear in search results. Your SEO company doesn’t. That means anyone promising you a specific ranking is making a promise about a system they do not control.

There are ways to pay for visibility through advertising, of course, but that’s not the same thing as earning organic search placement. If somebody is effectively buying your visibility, you need to understand that you may have to keep paying to maintain it. And if someone has found a quick way to manipulate rankings, that’s an entirely different concern.

Google has a long history of identifying websites that try to game search results. A business may shoot to the first page quickly and then lose that position at the next Google update because the tactics that got it there violated Google’s rules.

If something sounds too good to be true in SEO, it probably is.

The Risk Belongs To Your Business

If you hire an SEO company that breaks Google’s rules on your behalf, the SEO company isn’t the website that gets penalized. You are.

Google says it uses automated systems as well as human review to identify violations of its spam policies, and websites that violate those policies may rank lower or disappear from search altogether.

That can include practices such as buying links for ranking purposes, hiding content from users, creating pages designed primarily to manipulate rankings, or publishing large amounts of low-value content simply to influence search. And crawling out from underneath a penalty can be painful.

That’s why you want to be very careful before handing someone the keys to the kingdom — meaning access to the back end of your website. You should understand what they’re planning to do before they start doing it.

If you hire an SEO company that breaks Google’s rules on your behalf, the SEO company isn’t the website that gets penalized. You are.

Before you hand anyone access, it’s worth knowing what shape your site is actually in. That’s what an audit is for — and it’s a reasonable thing to ask for before you sign anything.

Good SEO Grows Over Time

SEO grows slowly because you’re earning Google’s trust. You do that by publishing useful content, building the authority of your website, making it clear what your business does, and consistently giving people information they actually want to read. Then you have to maintain that trust.

Someone may be able to improve results quickly because they’re building on authority you’ve already earned. That’s different from guaranteeing a result. Maybe your website has existed for ten years or you’ve already written 100 articles. Maybe Google already understands your business extremely well.

An SEO company coming in at that point is starting from very different ground than one working with a brand-new website. That’s why we think it’s important to understand where a website is starting before making promises about where it can go.

Ask For An SEO Audit Before You Ask For A Guarantee

This is one of the reasons Crownsville Media offers SEO audits. We need to understand where a client is starting from. How healthy is the website? What is already ranking? How much authority has been established? Are there technical problems? Is the business clearly represented across the web? Are there existing issues that could make growth harder? That tells us how big of a hill we have to climb.

A good SEO provider should be willing to talk to you about that starting point and explain what they’re seeing before making dramatic promises about the future.

What Should You Ask An SEO Company?

If someone offers you an SEO guarantee, ask for the evidence behind it:

  • Ask to see results from other clients
  • Ask for examples of websites they’ve helped grow
  • Ask what tactics and techniques they plan to use
  • Ask what they can control and what they cannot
  • And ask them what happens if Google changes its algorithm next month.

The proof is in the pudding. You should be able to see pretty quickly whether somebody has experience, a thoughtful strategy, and real results behind what they’re telling you.

SEO Guarantees Sound Good. But A Real Strategy To Grow Is Better.

Nobody can guarantee what Google or AI will do because both are constantly evolving. What we can do is follow the rules, pay attention to what changes, stay consistent, publish useful content, and continue earning Google’s trust over time. That’s the work.

If you’re talking with an SEO provider, ask them what they can realistically influence instead of asking what they can guarantee. And before you give anyone access to your website, make sure you understand exactly what they’re planning to do once they’re inside it.
