What Small Business Owners Need to Know About AI Visibility Right Now

Your next client may not begin their search on Google.

More people than ever are asking ChatGPT to recommend their therapist, website designer, or provider who fits exactly what they need. Instead of typing a few keywords, they can explain their situation, ask follow-up questions and narrow down their options through a conversation.

That creates an important question for every small business owner: Does AI understand your business well enough to recommend you?

I recently joined Jesse and Jamie on the Talk Branding to Me podcast to discuss how artificial intelligence is changing online visibility and what small businesses can do to keep up.

AI Visibility Starts With What You Publish

One of the most important points from our conversation is that AI cannot make assumptions about your expertise.

You may have years of experience with a particular population, industry or service. Your existing clients may know you are exceptionally good at it. But if that expertise is not clearly connected to your brand online, ChatGPT and other AI tools may never associate it with you.

If you want your business to be known for something, you need to publish information that establishes that connection on your website.

That means, each important service should have its own page. Your articles should answer the real questions prospective clients ask. Your experience, values, process and point of view should help people understand why you are the right provider for a particular need.

SEO, GEO and AEO Are Connected

What many people confuse are the terms. Even as a professional, it can feel like alphabet soup discussing the various acronyms. Here’s a quick break down:

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) – this is a set of practices and mindsets that help surface your content inside of search engines (and AI tools). This includes the list of “offered” results and the goal is stabilized placement so you rank consistently over time. This kind of marketing helps brands develop confidence in their lead sources and requires maintenance and consistency.

SEO focuses on marketing to strangers who need your product or service, not necessarily to referrals or other people who already know your value and worth. It is keyword focused and has both an art and science side to it.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) –  This is a second arm of SEO where we focus on getting your content cited as answers in AI tools (ChatGPT, Gemini, Grok Bot etc) in the form of quotes, short answers and longer form summaries.

AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) – this is marketing to the answers given by AI tools where answers are directly offered. A great example of this is asking Google, “how long can a glass of milk sit on the counter before it spoils?”  AEO answer = 2 hours. No need to read further.

While the terminology is changing, the foundation for your content being surfaced in any of these ways remains surprisingly familiar.

Your website needs to be accessible, organized and understandable.

Your content needs to demonstrate real experience and answer useful questions.

Search engines and AI platforms need enough trustworthy information to recognize what you do, who you help and what makes your approach different. There is no magic switch that suddenly makes your business visible in AI. You are building a body of evidence over time.

Your Website Has to Answer “Why You?” & “Why Now?”

Many service-based businesses offer similar lists of services. What helps a prospective client choose one provider over another is often the story beneath that list.

Why do you do this work? What do you understand that another provider might not? What is it like to work with you? What proof do you have that your approach works?

Those details help potential clients trust you. They also give AI platforms the context they need to distinguish your business from your competitors.

    In this conversation, we discuss:

    • How people use Google and AI differently
    • Why every primary service deserves its own page
    • How blogging supports long-term visibility
    • Why your niche can make your business easier to recommend
    • How values, proof and transparency influence buying decisions
    • What small business owners should expect as AI continues to evolve

If you are wondering what ChatGPT (Claude and Gemini too) knows about your business or how SEO fits into this changing search landscape, I invite you to listen to or watch the full conversation.
