If your therapy practice accepts insurance, you might wonder whether Google Ads will work for your business model. While paid ads are often associated with high-fee, private-pay practices, the truth is that Google Ads can work just as effectively for insurance-based therapists when the right strategy is in place.
Here’s how to build a profitable campaign that attracts high-intent, insurance-seeking clients, keeps your cost-per-acquisition manageable and ensures that your leads are both a clinical and financial fit.
Why Insurance-Friendly Ads Work
According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), more than 60% of therapy clients in the U.S. use their insurance to pay for services. Yet, only about 55% of mental health providers accept private insurance, creating a supply-demand gap that Google Ads can help bridge.
When someone types “therapist who takes Blue Cross” or “Aetna therapist near me” into a search bar, they’re not casually scrolling or doing vague research. They’re in a specific moment of need taking an intentional step toward starting therapy. These are people who have already decided to get help, have insurance in hand, and are actively trying to find someone they can see soon who fits both emotionally and financially.
These types of searches typically have lower volume than broad terms like “therapy near me,” but they can convert at higher rates. That makes them ideal for practices offering insurance options for clients.
Here are 6 key steps to include if you’re running your own Google Ad campaign. These are the same steps and precautions we use with all of our Google Ad clients so we know they work.
#1 Include insurance in your ad copy
Yes, you can include the names of insurance companies in your Google Ads copy, provided your use complies with Google’s advertising and trademark policies. Google allows use of third-party brand names like “Aetna” or “UnitedHealthcare” as long as you’re not claiming a formal affiliation. You should review these rules in Google’sTrademarks Policy and apply for the appropriate certifications to include branded names in your ads.
Therapists using this strategy often see stronger click-through rates by clearly listing accepted plans.
Make it easy for potential clients to know you’re a match by using headlines like:
“Denver Counselor Accepting Aetna”
“Annapolis Therapy – BCBS & UNC”
Remember your headlines are short and capped at 30 characters, so you have to make the most of this space. Adding insurance to your main headline helps clarify your offer and encourages clients to self-select, reducing irrelevant clicks and saving you money.
#2 Use insurance-specific keywords
Clients who plan to use insurance tend to search differently. That means you’ll want to build your keyword list around specific phrases that reflect how they search using combinations that include the names of the insurance providers you’re in network with, such as:
- “therapist who takes insurance near me”
- “BCBS therapist Chicago”
- “counseling covered by insurance”
- “couples counselor in Annapolis accepting insurance”
- “UnitedHealthcare therapist near me”
These long-tail keywords (keyword phrases that are several to many words) tend to be more specific and less competitive than generic terms. Use Google Keyword Planner or SEMrush to discover more keyword phrases that match how your ideal client searches for help online.
#3 Align your budget with how you’re reimbursed
Let your reimbursement rates, not your full fee, guide your ad budget. If your average session reimbursement is $90 and clients typically attend six sessions, your lifetime value (LTV) is $540. To stay profitable, aim for a cost-per-acquisition (CPA) of 25% or less which is roughly $135.
Begin with a test budget between $600 and $800 per month and allow Google’s algorithm 60 to 90 days to optimize performance. There’s more to strategizing on your ad budget, Ben Heath’s Youtube channel offers a lot of free and super helpful advice if you want to tackle Google Ads yourself.
#4 Optimize your landing page(s) for insurance clients
The landing page you send your ads to really does matter. The copy should match the messaging in your ads and serve as your main sales pitch, so it needs to do some heavy lifting. Ideally, your landing page should answer the questions most insurance users have:
- Do you take my plan?
- What does billing look like?
- Will I owe anything out-of-pocket?
- Do you offer “superbills” if I need to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed myself?
- How does the process work now that I know you accept my plan?
Best practice is to clearly list all insurance plans you accept and include a brief explanation of how you verify benefits and what the next steps are. Add trust elements like insurance logos, secure form icons and concise CTAs such as “Check Your Benefits” or “Book a Consultation” so next steps are clear and inviting.
Here’s a comprehensive list of details to make sure your website is “ad ready.”
#5 Track every call and form submission
Insurance-seeking clients often prefer to speak by phone. To make every lead count:
- Use Google’s call extension with conversion tracking
- Track all form submissions and online bookings using a proper “thank you” page
- Embed your calendar booking form from your ERT (electronic health record) directly on your landing page. This could be from Simple Practice, Therapy Notes etc.
- Confirm tracking with Google Analytics so you can measure inbound clicks that lead to calls/form submissions and those that do not
I can’t say this enough, tracking is critical. Without it, you’re guessing at what’s working and you’ll never know when your ads are resonating and the machine learning from Google is working in your favor or against you.
#6 Be Clear and transparent in your messaging
Clients value transparency and see it as the backbone for building trust. Avoid misrepresenting what you do (or do not) accept by saying things like “insurance accepted” when really, all you are willing to do is a superbill. Clients seeking to use their health insurance for mental health services do not want to pay out of pocket and get reimbursed. They expect to pay their co-pay and that’s all.
The more specific you are in your ads, the better the fit with the consumer. Proper ad matching increases the likelihood that you will connect with a real lead who can afford your services and is interested in engaging in a consultation with you.
Real Results From Insurance-Based Practices
While we have achieved successful ad results for many clients, sometimes reading how it works for other Google Ad providers can be helpful to validate what’s possible. Here’s a few notable stats to help.
According toTherapy Flow, well-run insurance-targeted campaigns average $35 to $85 per lead, which is well below the typical client lifetime value or LTV. Clients who come through insurance searches tend to stay longer, improving retention and profitability for your practice.
Industry benchmarks support this.LocaliQ reports an average 6.63% conversion rate for healthcare search ads. And WordStream notes that cost per lead for healthcare services often falls between $32 and $66.
Finally, a case study fromBrighter Vision showed a 42% drop in cost per lead for one Austin-based therapist after switching to insurance-specific ad language. Conversion rates doubled without increasing spend.
Common Mistakes To Avoid
Even with the right tools in place, a few common missteps can derail your campaign. These mistakes are easy to make, but just as easy to fix once you know what to look for.
- Generic ad copy: Attracts mismatched leads
- Sending traffic to your homepage: Always use a landing page tailored to your insurance policies and offerings
- Lack of tracking: You need data to know what works
- Over-targeting small ZIP codes: Broader city or county-level targeting often performs better
If you accept insurance, Google Ads can absolutely work for you when executed correctly. Focus on transparency, smart keyword use, a clear budget based on reimbursement, and a dedicated landing page or two that really connect with potential clients. And don’t forget to track your results.
