Guiding prospective leads from your Google Ad to becoming a new client

Running Google Ads for your therapy practice is just the beginning of the client journey. Once a potential client clicks your ad, everything that follows determines whether they become a booked appointment or a missed opportunity.

This article walks through the critical steps in the “click-to-client” journey and shows you how to create a simple, trustworthy experience that helps real people take the next step toward getting support.

Why This Journey Matters

Therapists often focus heavily on setting up ads, writing copy, and selecting keywords. But the actual client conversion happens after the ad is clicked. According to WordStream, the average healthcare ad converts around 6.6% of the time. That number jumps significantly when the landing page is helpful, the response is quick, and the experience feels personal.

If your post-click experience doesn’t match the promise of your ad, visitors will leave. And you still pay for the click, which is bad for your budget and your marketing. These seven steps outline how you nurture a prospective client to go from reading your Google ad to becoming a client.

Step 1: Ensure That Your Landing Page Matches the Google Ad Copy

The first thing your visitor sees should echo what they were searching for. For example:

Using the same words and tone on your landing page helps people feel confident they’re in the right place. The copy should deepen the conversation that was started with the ad. For example, if you discussed anxiety counseling and the insurances you accept, both should be discussed in greater detail on the landing page.

Consider writing about the kind of anxiety therapy you offer, modalities or areas of expertise and how therapy is paid for. If there are other pages on your website where you discuss insurance in greater detail, be sure to link to that page as well.

A few things to avoid: don’t send ad traffic to your homepage. Your home page has a little bit of information about all of your services which will confuse the reader looking exclusively for the service mentioned in your ad. Instead, create landing pages that speak directly to each service you’re promoting and send the ad traffic to those pages instead.

Step 2: Make Sure That The Landing Page Loads Fast (Especially on Mobile)

According to Google, more than half of mobile users will leave a site that takes more than three seconds to load. Use tools like Google PageSpeed Insights to check your speed so you can ensure that the page is optimized to load quickly. This is the way you get more leads while helping prospective consumers find the therapeutic support they’re looking for.

Step 3: Speak Directly To Your Audience

Once your page loads, the copy should speak directly to your client’s experience:

  • Struggling with panic attacks or daily anxiety?
  • We specialize in trauma-informed care for young adults.
  • Looking for help for ADHD and the impact it’s having on your relationship? You’re in the right place!

As writers, we tell our clients to use clear, inclusive language and visuals that reflect your ideal client. An exercise that is particularly helpful is to define and market to your ideal client based on real data that includes demographics, values, and the language clients use to describe their pain.

This level of alignment ensures that when someone lands on your page after clicking your Google ad that they immediately feel understood. (Read more about marketing to your ideal client

This is the kind of work that builds trust between your brand/business and prospective clients who are seeking the help you offer.

Step 4: Make Your Call To Action (CTA) Obvious & Easy To Respond To

Make your CTA simple and impossible to miss. Here are some examples:

  • Schedule a Complimentary Consultation Today
  • Call Now to Book Your First Appointment
  • Check Your Insurance Benefits

Use a bold button or a tap-to-call phone number. On mobile, it should take only one click to connect with your business. More than that, and you’re likely to lose customers.

Step 5: Once The Client Takes An Action, Measure What Happens

Until this step, most of the work has been on your shoulders. Now it’s time for your potential client to make a move and show their interest. They can do this by:

Each of these actions can be tracked and you can do this both in Google Ads and Google Analytics. Tools like a unique “thank you” page or call duration over 60 seconds help measure results and inform you which Google Ad drove the most number of clicks to your website and to your CTA.

Step 6: Respond Promptly

Responding quickly is one of the most important steps for someone seeking therapy. Think about this for a moment. When someone finally decides that “now” is the time to seek out help, they have been thinking about, and living with, their stress for long enough. They are ready for help, so a quick response time is important.

This is especially true if you’re dealing with a “cold” lead. Cold leads are prospective clients who have not reached out to you in the past. They may know very little about your business and yet feel compelled to reach out based on the copy of your Google Ad and your landing page. But, chances are you’re not the only therapist they have seen. When someone is ready to buy, they often look at multiple offers to see which one is the best.

According to Bright Call, 78% of customers buy from the “first responder.” In other words, the first therapist to respond more often than not, closes the deal. That doesn’t mean you have to interrupt your day to respond to client inquiry calls, but it is wise to respond as promptly as you can for both ethical and opportunity reasons.

Step 7: Finally, You Meet

Once a new client books their appointment, the marketing transitions into relationship building. Supporting new clients through the on-boarding process is a critical step for alleviating any concerns they may have about the seriousness of their mental health concern, cost and payment and therapy session specifics (time, date and location).

Your ad successfully got them to the door; it’s your therapeutic abilities that will help them move through the consultation process and become a client.

Bonus: Retargeting for Missed Opportunities

Not everyone who clicks on your Google Ad will book right away. But, you don’t have to start from scratch with each prospective new client. This is where retargeting comes in.

Retargeting (also called remarketing) is a way to follow up with people who visited your website but didn’t take action. It works by adding a small piece of code (a “pixel”) to your site. That pixel anonymously tracks your visitors. Once someone leaves your site, you can show them ads on platforms they use daily, like Google, YouTube, Facebook, or Instagram. It’s like a gentle reminder that “We’re still here if you need us.”

Here’s how it works on different platforms:

  • Google Display Network: Show visual ads across other websites they visit.
  • YouTube: Serve short video ads if your Google Ads account is connected to your YouTube channel.
  • Facebook and Instagram: Use the Meta Pixel to show targeted ads in their feed based on which pages they visited.

Retargeting helps keep your name top of mind, so when they’re ready, they know who to come back to.

Let the Click From Your Google Ad Lead Clients Somewhere That Matters

Starting with Google Ads opens up doors for your business that you may never have experienced before. Instead of relying solely on networking or directories like Psychology today, you can take a more active role in your marketing. This will build confidence in your ability to attract new clients and ultimately, run a thriving therapy practice, whether you are a solo-practitioner or run a group practice.
